Corrections and updates
We get facts right, and when we don't, we fix them in the open. This page explains how to report an error, how fast we respond, and how changes are labeled on our stories.
How to request a correction
Use the contact form and say it is a correction. Please include:
the link to the story,
what is wrong, and what you believe is correct,
a source or document that shows it, if you have one.
Anyone can report an error: readers, the people named in a story, members, and the stations we cite. We check every report.
How fast we respond
Within 2 business days
We reply to say we've received your report and are checking it.
As soon as it's confirmed
Once we confirm an error, we correct the story right away, normally within 2 business days of confirming it.
We tell you what we did
We reply with the outcome, including when we decide a story is accurate and doesn't need a change.
How changes are labeled on stories
We don't quietly change published facts. Every meaningful change gets a dated note at the end of the story, and the story's updated date changes to match.
Here is what a correction note looks like (an example, not a real correction):
Correction October 12, 2026: An earlier version of this story gave the wrong opening date. The exhibition opens December 3, not December 2.
Correction
A fact was wrong. The note says what was wrong and what is correct. If the error was serious or in the headline, the note also appears at the top of the story.
Clarification
The facts were right but could be misread. The note explains what we made clearer.
Update
New information arrived after we published, such as a new date or a result. The note says what was added.
Editor's note
Used in the rare case that a story is taken down or substantially rewritten. The page stays up with a note explaining why.
Typos, broken links and formatting fixes that don't change the meaning of a story are made without a note.
Member shows and station stories
A member can ask us to update their own show. A correction of a factual error is not removed because someone would rather it were not there. Station stories stay credited to the station that reported them. See Ownership & Funding and our editorial policy.
Stations and original posters can also remove a post themselves at /takedown.
