Mmm, Tasty!

Mmm, Tasty!

June in Yellowstone National Park is an interesting time. On this second day of summer, the temperatures were hovering around freezing, snow and sleet were falling periodically, and you could see the breath of the animals.

This lone bison, standing in the lush green grass near the Gardner River slowly losing his winter coat, captured my attention. He left the watering hole slowly, stopping to "make room" for more grazing, and briefly stuck his tongue directly out as if catching snowflakes, before curling it up into his nostril. I wasn’t aware that was even posiible, quite frankly. Beyond the unique action, I found it fascinating that the tongue is dark (nearly black) across the top, but that the center of the underside of the tongue is very light, nearly white.
