Meteora monastery next to patchy Fog

This is a shot of St. Stephen’s monastery next to patchy fog swirling around. In autumn a blanket of fog often lays over the whole region of Meteora, Greece in the morning.

The monastery was initially built in 1192 as St. Jeremiah’s; in 1350 St. Stephen’s church was chiseled in the rock mass. The male monks’ historic monastery was shelled and destroyed by Nazis during the German occupation in WWII. In 1961 the ruins were reconstructed; St. Stephen’s has been a nunnery ever since. The Meteora sandstone rock formations were formed 60 million years ago, are geologically unique and listed in UNESCO world heritage sites.
