Meteora in Snowstorm Philip № 3

The snow storm “Philip” struck Meteora, Greece on March 9, 2022, before cockcrow. This is the second snow storm hitting Meteora in seven days, as there was the storm “Bianca,” too, on March 2; two snow storms along with frost are quite unusual weather conditions for this area in March! May this coincidence be considered as a harbinger of nuclear winter…?!

Because of the ongoing heavy snowfall, St. Stephen’s monastery can barely be discerned on top of in Meteora, Greece. The monastery was initially built in 1192 as St. Jeremiah’s; in 1350 St. Stephen’s church was rock-hewn or chiseled in (or carved from) the rock mass. The male monks’ historic abbey was shelled and destroyed by Nazis during the German occupation in WWII. In 1961 the ruins were reconstructed and given over to nuns. St. Stephen’s has been a nunnery or nuns’ convent ever since.
