On Thursday, August 15, 1996 my wife, Debra Childs, and I caught the ferry from Çanakkale, across the Dardanelles to Eceabat in Turkey. We were aiming to spend some time in the Battlefields of the Gallipoli peninsula where the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) engaged with Atatürk (Mustafa Kemal) and his Turkish forces early during World War 1. This selfie is of our ferry docking in Eceabat. We both look very happy and chirpy 🙂
Interestingly, this photograph is probably the subject of the first-recorded citation of the term "selfie." Just prior to shooting the image, I was recording a video in which my wife can be heard encouraging me to “Take a selfie, take a selfie!” By all accounts, this was the first recorded use of the word "selfie," a story that the British Journal of Photography picked up on in April 2020.
35mm Pentax ME Super with a Tokina 24mm (f2.8) lens.
Google Maps – The port still looks relatively untouched today.
Google Maps – Here’s one more image that shows it hasn’t changed a lot since 1996.
