A selfie against one of the giant faces of the Bayon temple

A selfie against one of the gopurams (temple pagoda towers) with the giant faces of the Bayon temple. The Bayon, where I am now- is one of the scores of Angkor era temples which dot the countryside around Siem Reap, Cambodia. I had obliged an elderly Swiss tourist by taking a picture of him and his wife at this spot, so as a return gesture, he very kindly took this picture of me against the Bayon faces. I was just beginning to get the hang of solo travel- how to interact with others and obliged, and be obliged as far as photography was concerned etc. The current main conservatory body, the Japanese Government team for the Safeguarding of Angkor (the JSA) has described the Bayon temple as the most striking expression of the baroque style of Khmer architecture, in contrast with the classical style of Angkor Wat. Built by the Khmer king Jayavarman VII, the Bayon was the It was the centrepiece of Jayavarman VII’s massive program of monumental construction and public works, which was also responsible for the walls and nāga-bridges, the sprawling walled city of Angkor Thom and the temples of Preah Khan, Ta Prohm and Banteay Kdei. (see previous pictures earlier in this album for information about Ta Prohm and Bandeay Kdei). Detailed notes about the Bayon temple appeared earlier in this album (see previous pictures) and will also appear later as we go along (see subsequent images). (Siem Reap, Cambodia, Oct. 2008)
