03h11 on Saturday, October 21, 1989 at the Rio Hotel at Aksaray Caddesi Sait Efendi Sokak No:21/1 – Laleli, Istanbul, Turkey. I’d just flown in from the UK on a one-way ticket, made my way into town and tried to find accommodation. In the early hours of the morning, this was the best that I could do. Features of the room:
* In the cellar.
* It was two beds wide so front door and bathroom door could both only open half way.
* It was freezing!
* Radio came on automatically ar 06h00.
* No hot water.
* Very expensive at 40,000 Turkish Lire a night.
I checked out later that day and found rooftop accommodation at the cool Sultan Youth Hostel, Cankurtaran Mh., Akbiyik Cd No:17, 34122 Istanbul, Turkey.
This analogue selfie was taken in my room at the Rio Hotel, with my amazing Minolta AF-S V 35mm camera, mounted on a tripod. It’s a talking camera that I won in a competionion on Channel 702 in South Africa. For such an undeniably stupid product idea, the Minolta talker is a surprisingly good camera. It’s simple, small, has a wonderful loading mechanism and is a lot of fun to use. The camera’s dual personality allows you to be as discrete as you want with it. There is probably no better way to get a subject to smile than hearing a synthetic, strongly accented voice say “too dark, use flash!”
